Australian state port authority modernizes IT infrastructure with Microsoft cloud services

The Port Authority of New South Wales, a state-owned corporation that manages Sydney’s international cruise terminals and multiple regional ports, faced a rapid IT challenge after consolidating five ports and taking on management of three more. With roughly 200 servers, 80 TB of data, and a two-year deadline to centralize domains and IT services for additional ports, the organization needed a faster, more scalable disaster-recovery and infrastructure model to support operations and a mobile workforce.

Partnering with cubesys, the Port Authority migrated disaster-recovery and development/test environments to Microsoft Azure using Azure Site Recovery, Azure Backup, ExpressRoute, StorSimple, and Operations Management Suite, and began adopting Azure AD and Office 365. The move provided greater visibility, developer self-service, managed DR, and a shift from capital to operational expenditure—yielding a more flexible, secure, and cost‑effective platform with plans to migrate production workloads within 18 months.
