Case Study: Queensland Government achieves faster disaster damage assessment and recovery with Microsoft Azure

Australian state optimizes disaster recovery response with cloud-based mobile technology

The State of Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads needed a faster, more reliable way to document infrastructure damage across a vast, disaster-prone jurisdiction. Manual workflows—field staff taking photos then returning to the office to fill forms—made it hard to coordinate timely, consistent data during cyclones, floods and fires and slowed claims for relief funding.

Partnering with GIS People and using Microsoft Azure, the government adapted the Gruntify platform into the RADAR mobile app, enabling geotagged photo reports, offline capture and automated workflows feeding a central dashboard. Deployed ahead of disaster season and used during Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie, RADAR delivered real-time, organized evidence for decision-makers, improved reimbursement documentation, and saved an estimated 500+ hours in data collection and about four hours per funding submission.
