Archive on demand: With Microsoft Azure, UFA is creating an archive fit for the future

UFA, the century‑old German film and TV producer, faced rising operating and deployment costs for a rapidly growing digital archive (260 TB and +10 TB/year) and the editorial complexity of preparing content—metadata, languages and formats—for multi‑platform distribution. The company set a strategic goal to make its archive available on demand across all devices and ultimately migrate the entire production chain to the cloud.

To achieve this, UFA partnered with Interlake and nexxtv to migrate the archive to Microsoft Azure, deploying a VOD platform built on nexxtv’s nexxOMNIA, nexxPLAY and nexxCANVAS and integrating Azure Media Services and Cognitive Services. The result is an “archive on demand” that delivers scalable cost savings, multi‑device playback, new monetization opportunities and a foundation for future cloud editing and end‑to‑end cloud production.
