A Microsoft Azure Case Study
apoQlar, a Hamburg-based health‑tech startup, set out to reduce the guesswork surgeons face when planning and performing operations. Surgeons traditionally rely on 2D CT and MRI images, which can make locating tumors and explaining procedures to patients difficult and can increase the risk of miscalculations and repeat surgeries.
apoQlar’s Virtual Surgery Intelligence (VSI) is a cloud-based Azure app that reconstructs 3D anatomical models from DICOM data (up to ~500 slices) and displays them in Microsoft HoloLens with millimeter-accurate alignment to the patient. Deployed in multiple German hospitals and regularly updated, the solution improves intraoperative precision, enhances patient understanding and confidence, and has earned industry recognition including the Digital Health Award.
