A Microsoft Azure Case Study
AGL, one of Australia’s largest energy companies serving 3.7 million customer accounts and supplying about 20% of the national generation market, set out to scale an innovative virtual power plant (VPP) that aggregates customer-owned solar batteries to support grid reliability and lower energy costs. The challenge was ingesting and making sense of high-volume, time-series telemetry from distributed batteries using a flexible, serverless platform that could scale on demand and feed multiple business uses from retail to wholesale trading.
AGL implemented Microsoft Azure Data Explorer, using Kusto to parse and analyze streaming telemetry and provide fast, ad-hoc time-series insights. The serverless, integrated solution enabled a nationwide VPP rollout, improved grid balance and reliability, helped put downward pressure on prices while rewarding customers, and supported award-winning innovation with plans to scale further into consumer apps and e-mobility.
