XTO Energy taps into IoT and the cloud to optimize operations and drive growth with Azure and Dynamics 365

ExxonMobil subsidiary XTO Energy needed a better way to monitor and optimize thousands of widely dispersed oil and gas wells in the harsh, low-connectivity Permian Basin. Field technicians were spending long hours manually collecting data and driving between sites, so the company turned to Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics and related Azure IoT services to digitally capture and analyze well data more efficiently.

Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics helped XTO Energy build an IoT-based data platform using Azure IoT Edge, Azure IoT Hub, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks, and Azure Time Series Insights, with Dynamics 365 Field Service adding workflow and mobile access. The solution enabled near real-time visibility into well conditions, automated work order creation, and dynamic routing of field staff, helping XTO reduce downtime, improve safety and environmental performance, and boost productivity; notably, a five-person team built the system from scratch and got devices collecting real-time data in the field within 12 months.
