The IoT of the Storm: Energy provider builds real-time asset tracking, enhancing storm recovery and customer service

Southern Company, one of the largest energy providers in the United States, needed a better way to collect and analyze sensor data from trucks, equipment, and crew devices in real time. Working with Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics and related Azure services, the company set out to turn large batches of data into actionable insights for storm recovery, fleet management, equipment tracking, and worker safety.

Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics helped Southern Company build an IoT solution that ingests data through Azure IoT Hub, standardizes and reduces it into manageable time slices, and sends it to downstream systems for immediate use. The result is faster power restoration, better customer service, improved theft prevention, and safer operations for lone workers, with Azure’s elasticity allowing the company to scale up during major storms to handle more messages, alerts, and crews.
