Portuguese destination city Cascais promotes civic value with cloud-based engagement platform

Câmara Municipal de Cascais, the municipal government of Cascais, Portugal, wanted to preserve the city’s high quality of life while engaging a growing mix of residents and tourists in more civic and sustainable behaviors. To do this, it partnered with Microsoft Azure and InnoWave to support the CityPoints citizen engagement platform, using services including Azure, Azure API Management, Azure IoT Hub, Azure Machine Learning, Azure Stream Analytics, and Power BI.

Microsoft Azure helped power a cloud-based, gamified platform that lets people earn points and rewards for actions like recycling, using public transport, visiting cultural sites, and supporting community initiatives. The solution gave the city real-time engagement and reporting capabilities, improved civic participation, and supported a scalable model for smart-city growth; CityPoints was also recognized with the 2017 World Summit Award for best mobile app for government and citizen engagement.
