IoT drives fusion of art and community in a perception-altering exhibition

Towada Art Center, a small art museum in Japan, wanted to create a new kind of community-focused exhibition that extended art beyond the museum walls while keeping visitors safe. For its Stranger Than Fiction exhibition and the LOST TERMINAL project, the museum needed a way to let people ride location-specific vehicles freely around the city while monitoring them in real time. Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics was part of the Azure-based solution used to support this challenge.

Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics was implemented with Azure IoT Hub, Azure Cosmos DB, and Bing Maps to collect GPS data, analyze vehicle locations, and display them on a museum screen. Nissho Electronics built the system in just 10 business days, and the result helped reduce staff concerns, improve safety and regulatory compliance, and turn live vehicle tracking into part of the artwork itself. The solution enabled the exhibition to blend into daily city life and expand the possibilities for art through IoT.
