Case Study: ABB helps NRS improve aquaculture monitoring with Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics

ABB empowers fish farmers with an AI-infused solution for sustainable aquaculture

ABB partnered with Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics to help Norwegian salmon farmer Norway Royal Salmon (NRS) solve a difficult aquaculture challenge: safely and accurately monitoring fish biomass in harsh offshore conditions. NRS needed a better way to measure fish stock, improve feeding decisions, and optimize harvest planning without requiring employees to manually inspect pens in wind, rain, and snow.

Microsoft Azure Stream Analytics was used as part of an AI and IoT solution built with Azure IoT, Azure IoT Hub, Azure IoT Edge, Azure Machine Learning, and Azure SQL Database. The system ingests live video from underwater cameras, analyzes the streams to estimate biomass, and sends results to ABB Ability for Aquaculture dashboards for real-time decision-making. The pilot has already improved safety and is expected to boost ROI by enabling more accurate biomass estimates, better feed utilization, and more efficient use of farming licenses and harvesting schedules.
