Virginia Railway Express - Customer Case Study

The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is a commuter rail service connecting Northern Virginia suburbs to Washington, DC, with a fleet that includes 30 diesel/diesel-electric locomotives and around 100 bi-level passenger cars — 300,000‑pound vehicles that require highly specialized maintenance. John Duque, Manager of Information Technology at VRE, described a “repair and return” process in which removed components are taken out of inventory and re-entered with a new ID and repair cost, so VRE needed a CMMS that could adapt to that industry‑specific workflow rather than forcing standard inventory practices.

VRE implemented MicroMain Maintenance Management and used its flexible inventory management features to simplify handling their $7M worth of inventory while preserving their established “repair and return” process. Initially purchased for tracking consumables, the software was expanded to track non‑consumable items as well, allowing VRE to streamline return/repair tasks and inventory management without changing core procedures — supporting reliable service for 20,000 daily commuters.
