A Michelin Case Study
The City of Ottawa faced the challenge of managing a large network of over 6,000 lane kilometers of roadway, where frequent speeding and harsh braking created dangerous hotspots. Their traditional reactive approach, based on past collision data, was insufficient, and their physical data collection hardware provided only limited coverage. To shift to a proactive safety strategy, the city collaborated with vendor Michelin to leverage its data products from Michelin Mobility Intelligence.
Michelin implemented a solution that included a before-and-after analysis of speed enforcement, hotspot identification, and a vulnerable road user risk analysis. The results were significant: the initial implementation of speed enforcement cameras led to a 20% reduction in speeding in less than a year. Michelin's work also identified eight high-risk areas for enforcement and five high-risk hotspots for vulnerable road users, allowing the city to proactively prioritize its safety efforts.
