Building an integrated and transparent approach to risk management

Capital Guidance, a privately owned global investment firm operating across real estate, commercial distribution and financial investments, needed to move from a strong internal audit function to a formalized enterprise risk management capability. Leadership faced questions about the organization’s risk maturity, how to link risks, controls, processes and KRIs, whether to use top‑down or bottom‑up approaches, and whether to adopt software—while also securing board and management buy‑in.

The internal audit team led a pilot in one business (Company 5 in China) to assess maturity (found to be ad hoc), define a risk appetite, map KRIs→risks→processes→functions→businesses, and implement policies, heat maps and thresholds. They deployed MetricStream to centralize KRIs and risk data, enable automated alerts and dashboards, and institutionalize reporting and training. The result was improved risk‑management maturity, greater visibility and streamlined inventories, timely identification of reportable issues, and a three‑year plan to roll the approach out across the group.
