Meteomatics Supports UK Power Networks in Adapting the Network to Low-Carbon Sources

UK Power Networks, the distribution network operator serving London, the South East and East of England, needed more accurate weather intelligence to support its transition to a low-carbon grid. As it moved to a more active DSO model, the company faced the challenge of forecasting demand, renewable generation and storage needs with enough precision to manage flexibility markets efficiently. It turned to Meteomatics’ high-resolution weather data and energy forecasting capabilities to improve operational decision-making.

Meteomatics implemented granular weather forecasting at 90-meter spatial resolution, feeding UK Power Networks’ machine learning models for demand prediction, renewable generation forecasting and real-time grid balancing. The results included more efficient flexibility procurement, expected savings of over £400 million over five years for billpayers, and improved network utilization. Meteomatics’ forecasts also helped avoid 23 GWh of curtailment during a 12-week outage, saving about £2 million and preventing 4,682 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
