The customer, Upright, is a real estate investment platform that relies heavily on its data for strategic operations. Their data engineering team, led by Rebecca Chapin, faced a challenge in scaling data quality assurance beyond basic dbt tests to efficiently capture a wider range of issues and protect production datasets from upstream errors. They sought a solution to complement their existing dbt tests and provide a more robust layer of data observability to support their business intelligence in Sigma.

The vendor, Metaplane, was implemented to provide this additional layer of data quality assurance. The solution leveraged Metaplane’s machine learning-based monitors for row count, freshness, and custom SQL rules, which automatically set data quality thresholds. This drastically improved the triage process for data issues, reducing it from several hours down to a few minutes using features like column-level lineage. The implementation of over 150 monitors has allowed Upright to proactively catch issues from upstream code changes and fake account creation, preventing potential harm and building greater trust in their data across the company.
