UNICEF Aotearoa New Zealand, the New Zealand arm of UNICEF, needed to maintain fundraising and donor engagement during COVID-19 lockdowns when face-to-face outreach and events were no longer possible. To find the right digital channels, UNICEF surveyed donors and discovered that email and SMS were their preferred ways to be contacted, leading them to work with Sinch MessageMedia.
Sinch MessageMedia helped UNICEF Aotearoa New Zealand add SMS and Text2Donate into its fundraising strategy. In the Kickathon campaign, supporters could donate via a simple four-digit text number, helping raise $500,000, with many donors giving more than once and averaging $11 each; in the Afghanistan Earthquake Appeal, SMS delivered a 90% open rate in 90 seconds and generated more than 60 donations early in the campaign.
