Westar Energy, a Kansas-based utility serving about 640,000 customers, needed to ensure reliable delivery of critical electric and gas messaging between a DB2 mainframe and field-mobile CAD terminals, despite rural radio coverage and many potential points of message loss. To solve this, Westar deployed MQSeries middleware and engaged vendor meshIQ, using its 360° Situational Awareness middleware-management capabilities to monitor and manage those message flows end-to-end.

meshIQ implemented its situational-awareness/MQSeries management solution across Westar’s OS/390 and NT servers, providing centralized administration, guaranteed transaction delivery from mainframe to truck and back, and easy integration that impressed the CAD vendor. The result was reduced risk of lost data in remote areas, more reliable dispatch and service reconnection after outages, and rapid adoption into four additional projects — protecting service for Westar Energy’s customers and improving operational confidence.
