The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) needed a scalable way to store, retrieve, and manage massive volumes of medical images across distributed facilities while meeting a 75-year retention requirement. Merlin International helped support the VA’s VistA Imaging system, which integrates clinical images and other non-textual data into the electronic medical record.

Merlin International replaced the legacy optical jukebox archive with an intelligent, policy-based file management solution that provides online access, file replication, and on-demand retrieval. The new infrastructure now stores more than 4.5 billion images, tracks over 1.3 million unique patients per month, and helps the VA expand storage without disruption while improving access, reducing wait times, and supporting better care.
