Comcast launches Xfinity Stream with Mercury Intermedia over 15 years

Comcast, one of the largest media companies in the world, sought to extend its television services to mobile devices following the launch of the iPad. They initially engaged vendor Mercury Intermedia to assess the feasibility of using an iPad as a remote control for a set-top box, which evolved into a long-term partnership to develop what would become the Xfinity Stream application.

Mercury Intermedia developed innovative solutions for the Xfinity Stream app, including a proprietary content delivery mechanism for a high-performance channel guide and a creative method for downloading DRM-protected content for offline viewing. The results were highly successful; the initial app received an Emmy Engineering Certificate in 2011, and the ongoing collaboration has produced a leading application that allows millions of Comcast customers to watch and record TV from anywhere.
