Saab’s journey into the future with Mercur

Saab Aeronautics, part of Saab, needed to replace an aging 35-year-old contracts management system used for Gripen projects and also wanted better support for business intelligence, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. The company chose Mercur and its Mercur Business Control solution after years of discussion because the existing Excel-based process was time-consuming, manual, and risky, with around 70 linked files used to build budgets and forecasts.

Mercur implemented a new multi-dimensional contract management application and expanded it to support analysis, budgeting, forecasting, business planning, and reporting. The result was a more robust, quality-assured process with less reliance on Excel, standardized input forms, faster finance processes, and cycle times reduced by several weeks; it also improved analysis through drill-down and slice-and-dice capabilities. Mercur enabled Saab to move from manual data collection to a more analytical controller role and laid the foundation for future workflow control and full income statement and balance sheet reporting.
