Washington Federal Bank Delivers Great Online Customer Experiences

Washington Federal (WaFd) is a U.S. retail and commercial bank with over 200 branches that needed to modernize its online banking portal to meet rising customer expectations. An eight-month attempt to replace the portal with white‑label solutions failed because those platforms lacked customizability, could not integrate key services, and couldn’t deliver personalized experiences tied to customer identity and behavior—capabilities WaFd required as their deposits and product usage grew.

WaFd chose Mendix low-code to rebuild the portal, completing the initial public-facing web experience in 10 months and surpassing the prior vendor’s progress within six weeks. The new platform integrates with their API gateway, supports account and transaction views, transfers and bill pay, delivers personalized experiences, is cloud-native for easy scaling, and enables bi-monthly feature releases. As a result, WaFd gained full control over the digital customer experience, deeper insights into customer behavior, and a foundation to extend to mobile apps and internal tools.
