A Mendix Case Study
VGZ, the Netherlands’ second-largest health insurer covering more than four million people, needed a faster, more user-friendly way for customers to view policies and submit claims while cutting back-office costs. Faced with a loosely defined, fast-moving project and strict Dutch/EU data‑protection requirements, the insurer chose an agile low-code approach to deliver a mobile app for scanning receipts and progressing claims without months of traditional specification and coding.
Using Mendix, VGZ had a proof of concept on staff devices in three weeks and an enhanced version in six, then built the production app with tight business–developer collaboration and integrated Onegini for secure mobile authentication. The app passed security tests, links to back-end APIs, launched in November 2016, and reached 70,000 downloads in five months; as of April 2017 it handled about 5,000 claims per week (≈10% of weekly claims), reducing processing costs and speeding payouts, and was later rolled out to other VGZ brands.
