ProRail Uses Low-Code Automation to Deliver Reliable Transportation

ProRail, the Dutch government–mandated operator responsible for maintaining over 6,800 km of national railway, needed to keep passenger and freight services safe, on time, and compliant with strict KPIs. With complex planning and high-stakes operations, the business kept generating ideas for efficiency improvements that swelled IT’s backlog and spawned shadow IT, so ProRail required a faster, more controlled way to deliver reliable office and operational applications.

ProRail adopted a low-code application platform (Mendix), built a solution-oriented supplier team, and moved to agile/DevOps practices, delivering 37 tailored apps in five years — including risk & contract management, work management, and Plandix for project drawings. The approach cut development effort by about 5x, sped time-to-value, reduced the app portfolio from 105 to 10, curbed shadow IT, and brought IT and the business into closer, more productive alignment.
