A Mendix Case Study
PostNL is the national parcel and mail carrier across the Benelux, processing millions of items daily—about 1–1.3 million parcels plus 6.8 million letters—through 32 sorting centers and routes for roughly 4,000 drivers. Rapid e‑commerce growth and a legacy, manual-heavy IT setup made time‑critical planning error‑prone and vulnerable to outages, creating an urgent need for a scalable, resilient order‑management solution to handle peak seasons and rising volumes.
Working with CAPE Groep on the Mendix platform, PostNL replaced the monolith with 64 microservices (an input and process service per depot, each duplicated for failover), enabling the system to process roughly 10 million transactions a day, push routes to field services, and support ~4.5 million end‑to‑end trackers. Built with CI/CD and active monitoring, the new architecture is highly available, allows live updates, reduces errors and downtime, scales for future growth, and now serves as a model for modern postal operations.
