PostNL, the leading postal company in the Netherlands that handled an average of 8.6 million mail items (including 1 million parcels) per day in 2020, faced the challenge of becoming a digital‑first, tech‑driven logistics provider. With most IT and development previously outsourced and customers increasingly demanding digital services, leadership committed to shifting from a directing culture to an engineering culture and building in‑house software capability to meet rising expectations.
To do this, PostNL created an internal Mendix development team through targeted recruitment (including a partnership with retraining provider Motopp and internal upskilling), established a low‑code community charter with monthly meetups and cross‑team workgroups, and adopted an app‑factory framework to standardize development, testing, and operations. The result is a scalable, faster and more secure development practice—already running nearly 70 Mendix apps that process 1.4 million parcel orders daily—stronger stakeholder buy‑in, and a solid foundation for ongoing digital transformation.
