PostNL, the Netherlands’ national postal carrier serving 17 million customers, faced a surge in e‑commerce that outstripped its legacy monolithic order‑management system (designed for ~600k parcels/day). The old system was brittle, slow to change and unable to support new operator-specific services or the scale and agility PostNL needed for rapidly growing parcel volumes.
Working with Mendix and partner CAPE Groep, PostNL re‑architected the platform into a Mendix low‑code, microservices landscape (64 services across depots) deployed on Mendix Cloud with CI/CD and strong monitoring. The new system supports millions of daily parcels (reported at double‑digit millions at peak), gives 4.5 million customers live delivery visibility, eliminated a multi‑year IT backlog in months, and enabled faster feature delivery, new lines of business and continuous operational improvement.
