A Mendix Case Study
NC State University tapped Jordan Boyle, a Business Information Technology graduate with little formal programming experience, to solve a growing campus need: track lab equipment, usage, billing and mandatory safety training. Off-the-shelf systems were costly and inflexible, so the university chose a low-code platform and Boyle volunteered to become their first Mendix developer to close the talent and capability gap.
Using Mendix he built two campus apps — REPORTER for non-credit activity and compliance tracking, and Lab Management, which handles equipment inventories, billing, training validation and self-service training registration. The low-code approach let a single developer deliver an integrated, cost-effective solution quickly, simplified complex queries and REST integrations, and spawned a Mendix university program and student mentoring to grow future developers.
