Heijmans Delivers IoT App for Smart Building Management

Heijmans, a Dutch construction firm founded in 1923, launched the BeSense initiative to turn buildings into smart, sustainable workplaces by collecting anonymous sensor data on occupation, temperature, CO2, light and humidity. The challenge was to aggregate that IoT data, link it with partners’ systems, and deliver an easy-to-use platform and apps quickly so different users (cleaners, employees, facility managers and executives) could take actionable, efficiency-boosting decisions.

Heijmans partnered with ITvisors to build a cloud-based data platform and Mendix low-code application, using LoRa sensors and Microsoft Azure for secure data processing; a proof of concept led to a full app delivered in six months using Agile methods. The result: targeted cleaning schedules and routes, real-time space and air-quality insights, better facility planning and potential cost savings, plus a scalable, flexible platform that can expand to support more services.
