eXp Realty’s Lessons Learned as a Remote-First Organization

eXp Realty is a cloud-native, remote-first real estate company whose engineering team grew to 100+ people while supporting explosive agent growth from ~2,400 to over 50,000. They faced two linked challenges: a fragile, monolithic Transaction Management System that frequently crashed and couldn’t scale to meet demand, and the need to maintain culture, communication and a reliable way to measure productivity across a fully distributed workforce.

To solve this, eXp rebuilt its core platform with Mendix low-code, creating scalable modular apps for agent onboarding, listings and transactions, compensation and financial reporting, all integrated with their accounting system. The new platform delivered far better reliability and throughput, enabled faster iterative development by a globally distributed team, removed the need for physical offices, and directly supported rapid agent growth and accurate public reporting.
