Development Firm Re-energizes Utility Industry with Low-code SaaS Products

Avertra, a global integration services and product development firm for the energy and utilities sector, set out to build MiUtility — a microservices-based SaaS platform to unify siloed applications and streamline processes like customer onboarding. After investing more than $10 million, distributed teams, architectural debt, and long developer ramp-up times (3–5 months) created delays and drove the company to seek a new, faster development approach.

Avertra rebuilt MiUtility on the Mendix low-code platform, which eliminated much technical debt, enabled smaller collaborative teams, and shortened engineer onboarding to about four weeks. The switch sped product delivery, cut customer onboarding with MiAgent from 16 minutes to 5, supported rapid POCs (under six weeks) and broad integrations (SAP, ML/cognitive services), and positioned MiUtility as a scalable, configurable SaaS product Avertra can resell and extend.
