A Mendix Case Study
Afval loont is a Dutch social enterprise founded in 2011 that incentivizes household recycling by paying participants per kilogram of waste delivered to regional recycling shops. The program grew from zero to about 37,000 active users, but Afval loont’s original traditional app became outdated and inflexible as different municipalities required custom designs, payment rules and waste categories, creating scalability and maintenance challenges.
Partnering with 21South, Afval loont rebuilt its platform using Mendix low-code: a prototype was demoed in a day and a full hybrid mobile app was delivered in about three months. The solution added QR-based tracking, a user dashboard for kilos/earnings/CO2, and integrations for messaging, navigation and donations, enabling fast iteration, one-on-one engagement and easier customization by non-developers — increasing participation, reducing waste to incinerators and making the program scalable for future growth.
