Siemens Mobile Communications needed to perform secure and robust over-the-air software updates for a fleet of digital cab radios on trains for Network Rail in the UK. Their challenge was to manage updates at scale for over 11,000 devices, perform remote diagnostics, and ensure compliance with strict security standards, all over an LTE-R connection.

Mender provided a secure OTA update management server and client solution for Siemens. The solution utilized A/B partitioning and automatic rollouts to minimize the risk of bricking devices. With features like two-factor authentication and Mutual TLS, Mender's security architecture helped Siemens comply with the IEC 62443 standard. This enabled Siemens to reliably update and manage their large device fleet.
