The University of Pennsylvania Health System faced significant challenges ensuring patient adherence to complex, at-home oral oncology therapies like capecitabine. Monitoring these medication regimens and associated toxicities was highly resource-intensive for providers and had led to frequent errors and avoidable complications. To address this, Penn Medicine partnered with Memora Health.
Memora Health implemented an AI-powered, SMS-based assistant named "Penny" to support patients. The solution sent medication reminders, conducted weekly symptom surveys, and used AI to triage patient concerns. Results included the exchange of 4,500 messages with high AI interpretation accuracy (98% for symptoms, 93% for meds), a 180% growth in patient engagement with symptom assessments, and over 50% completion of positive exit interviews.
