A Meltwater Case Study
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP) at the University of Hong Kong is a multidisciplinary centre using a public‑health approach to reduce suicides through research, training and policy influence. Building an early‑warning system since 2018, CSRP struggled with time‑consuming, incomplete data collection—particularly capturing inclusive suicide news and representative social sentiment—which limited the accuracy and timeliness of its risk estimates and alerts.
CSRP adopted Meltwater’s all‑in‑one media monitoring and social listening subscription, using its API and custom imports to feed inclusive, real‑time data into the centre’s machine‑learning now‑casting model daily. The platform expanded coverage, made data easy to validate and explore, saved significant time and resources, and enabled CSRP to publish timely, more reliable early warnings to educators, social workers, academics and government stakeholders.
