A Meltwater Case Study
CARE is a global humanitarian organization operating in 90+ countries, reaching over 50 million people through more than 950 poverty-fighting and relief programs. Faced with the problem that many large-scale crises receive little media attention—about 40 humanitarian disasters in 2019 affected more than one million people each—CARE needed a way to identify and spotlight the most under-reported emergencies to inform journalists, policymakers and the public.
Partnering with Meltwater, CARE used media intelligence to monitor coverage of 40 crises and analyze more than 2.4 million online articles in English, German, French, Arabic and Spanish. The resulting "Suffering in Silence" report and #sufferinginsilence campaign identified the ten least-covered countries, broadened coverage in Arabic and Spanish markets, and gave CARE actionable insights to drive media outreach, public engagement and more effective aid prioritization.
