Backabuddy is a South African donation-based crowdfunding platform (founded in 2007) that helps individuals and NGOs raise money for causes. Despite a strong track record — including a historic R21 million raised — Backabuddy struggled to get its many campaigns noticed nationwide: outdated PR databases and high journalist turnover left the platform with great stories but “no crowd.”
Using Meltwater’s Influencers tool (with Beats and Location filters and a handy mobile app), Backabuddy quickly found relevant, up-to-date media contacts, built relationships and tracked impact. In six months they secured 74 published articles, an extended reach of 89,378,712, saved R322,625 in outreach costs, and saw increased engagement and donation sizes — making campaigns easier to promote and measure.
