AstraZeneca Australia, a 60‑year‑plus biopharmaceutical leader, faced a sudden spotlight in 2020 after partnering with Oxford to develop a COVID‑19 vaccine. At the same time the company had no formal communications function and operated in a highly regulated environment, so Head of Communications Melissa Millard needed to support brands, build reputation with healthcare stakeholders and give staff better visibility into media coverage and public conversations.
In August 2020 AstraZeneca partnered with Meltwater to unify media monitoring, social listening and reporting. Using Meltwater’s platform the team launched an internal branded newsletter as a single source of truth, ran rapid analyses with Explore (leveraging Social Echo and Emotional Comparison metrics) and gained actionable insights into coverage and sentiment—improving internal communications, demonstrating PR impact and tracking public interest in the company’s vaccine and broader initiatives.
