Royal Ontario Museum launches five-night Pompeii projection mapping with Meld Media

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) sought a dramatic way to promote its upcoming Pompeii exhibit by recreating the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on its distinctive Crystal facade. They hired vendor Meld Media to accomplish this challenge using projection mapping technology.

Meld Media designed and animated a series of five looping projections for the museum's exterior. The solution included an accurate model of the volcano and fluid simulations for ash and the final eruption, which was synchronized with opening-day fireworks. Additionally, Meld Media created an animation of the pyroclastic flow for the interior exhibit to serve as a backdrop for the artifacts.
