Union Hospital’s Journey to HIMSS Stage 7
Union Hospital of Cecil County, a full-service community hospital in Elkton, Maryland, set out to move beyond its HIMSS Stage 6 status and achieve a fully paperless, Stage 7 environment. Working with MEDITECH and its EHR, the hospital needed to better connect clinical data, streamline workflows, and support more complete patient records across care settings.
MEDITECH helped Union Hospital implement scanning and archiving, integrate data from two state health information exchanges, and redesign key workflows for oncology navigation, catheter removal, domestic violence screening, and paperless document handling. The results included same-day scanning, faster chart completion, improved care coordination, and measurable quality gains such as reducing CAUTI cases from 1 to 0 and lowering catheter device utilization ratios across departments, while also saving physicians about an hour of paperwork per day.
