Union Hospital Improves Care Efficiency with Multiple Health Information Exchange (HIE) Strategy

Union Hospital of Cecil County, a 83-bed community hospital in Elkton, Maryland, needed a better way to manage clinical information for patients who travel across state lines into Delaware and back into Maryland. Using MEDITECH’s EHR, the hospital faced the challenge of improving care coordination, clinician efficiency, and patient experience while serving a geographically diverse population.

MEDITECH implemented a multiple-HIE strategy connecting Union Hospital to Maryland’s CRISP and Delaware’s DHIN, embedding shared clinical data such as lab results, imaging, summaries of care, alerts, and discharge information directly into provider workflows. The result was faster access to patient histories, reduced repeat testing and long waits, about one hour less paperwork per physician per day, and lower costs from fewer EHR interfaces and more efficient care delivery.
