A MEDITECH Case Study
Stamford Hospital, a 305-bed community teaching hospital in Stamford, CT, was struggling to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) and urinary catheter use despite prior education, hand-hygiene, and cleaning efforts. Working with MEDITECH and its EHR-based nursing documentation, physician documentation, CPOE, clinical decision support, and reporting tools, the hospital set out to improve catheter management and prevent infections.
MEDITECH helped Stamford implement a nurse-directed urinary catheter removal protocol embedded in the EMR, with physician order sets, Foley time limits, nurse checklists, daily review of catheter need, and unit-level reporting. The results were significant: hospital-wide catheter use fell by 50%, UTIs dropped by more than 70%, CAUTI rates declined from 4.3 to 1.4 per 1,000 catheter-days, and the program was estimated to save $100,000 and six lives over three years, with reductions sustained for seven years.
