St. Bernards Healthcare Lowers SIR with CLABSI Prevention Processes

St. Bernards Healthcare, a 353-bed referral hospital in Jonesboro, Arkansas, needed a more reliable way to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) after seeing a standardized infection ratio (SIR) of 1.551, well above the national benchmark. Working with MEDITECH and its EHR, the organization sought better tools, education, and documentation support to help nurses and physicians manage central line care consistently.

MEDITECH helped St. Bernards build a HIRO (highly reliable organizational plan) package inside its EHR, including order sets, dashboards, checklists, education resources, and reporting to create “one source of truth” for CLABSI prevention. The result was a dramatic drop in SIR to 0.257 by FY 2018–2019, later reaching 0.241 in April 2020, while also improving compliance, accountability, and staff alignment around central line care.
