Ontario Shores Advances Patient Engagement with MEDITECH

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, a 346-bed public teaching hospital in Whitby, Ontario, wanted to improve patient engagement and care continuity for people living with complex mental illness. Before implementing a digital portal, patients had limited access to their own care information, medication refill requests and information requests were handled manually, and communication with caregivers between appointments was limited. Ontario Shores turned to MEDITECH and its Patient and Consumer Health Portal to help support a more collaborative, service-user-driven model of care.

MEDITECH implemented a secure patient portal branded as Ontario Shores’ HealthCheck, giving patients access to lab results, medications, visit history, appointment management, secure messaging, and the ability to view, download, print, and share records. The results were significant: portal users showed more than a 16% improvement in total MHRM activation scores, improved in 7 of 8 recovery domains, were 67% more likely to attend appointments, and were nearly 30% less likely to submit information requests. Ontario Shores also reported greater administrative efficiency and stronger patient autonomy.
