MEDITECH's Surveillance Identifies and Prevents Infections at Valley

The Valley Hospital, a 451-bed acute care hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, needed a better way to detect sepsis early, support infection surveillance, and improve compliance with quality measures. Working with MEDITECH, the hospital explored how electronic surveillance could help clinicians identify patients whose condition was deteriorating before symptoms became obvious.

MEDITECH implemented 6.1 Surveillance at The Valley Hospital, including a Sepsis Surveillance Board and additional boards for urinary catheters, central lines, VTE, and vaccine administration. The solution automatically analyzed EHR data, alerted care teams in real time, and supported workflow-driven intervention, helping Valley achieve 100% detection of HIM-coded septic patients by electronic surveillance in one month, 93% sepsis board coding alignment, 78% to 98% flu vaccine compliance, a 93% VTE prophylaxis rate, and an estimated 30 minutes of nursing time saved through automated catheter tracking.
