Avera Health, a large Midwest health system, wanted to make pharmacogenomic testing easier to use at the point of care so clinicians could choose the best pain medication without relying on paper-based workflows. Working with MEDITECH, Avera needed a way to bring genetic results into its EHR and clinician workflow so providers could find and act on results more quickly.

MEDITECH helped Avera Health implement structured documentation, CPOE-based ordering, and clinical decision support for pain genotyping within the MEDITECH EHR. Results now flow into the medical record as discrete data, alerts guide prescribing, and duplicate testing is flagged; turnaround time dropped from 5–10 days to about 1 business day. In the pilot and early rollout, 66% of tested surgical patients had affected pharmacogenomic results, and among more than 1,500 genotyped patients, nearly half were abnormal or reduced metabolizers, supporting safer, more personalized pain management.
