Hilo Medical Center Improves SEP-1 Compliance by 34 Percentage Points Using MEDITECH’s Expanse EHR

Hilo Medical Center, a safety-net hospital in Hawaii Health Systems Corporation serving a largely uninsured and vulnerable population, needed to improve SEP-1 core quality measure compliance and reduce sepsis rates in a medically underserved area with significant physician shortages. The hospital turned to MEDITECH and its Expanse EHR, including the Sepsis Management Toolkit and Quality and Surveillance solution, to help identify septic patients earlier and standardize care.

MEDITECH implemented automated sepsis surveillance, triage-based screening rules, alerting in the ED Tracker, and a combined 3-hour/6-hour sepsis bundle workflow to coordinate physicians and nurses. As a result, Hilo Medical Center improved coded-data SEP-1 compliance from 42% to 76%, a 34-point increase, while also enabling earlier detection of potential sepsis and better team response.
