KOZM Guitars - Customer Case Study

The customer, KOZM Guitars, a custom guitar maker, faced the unique challenge of machining a complex, contoured 3D groove along the curved surface of a guitar body. Standard 3-axis CAM toolpaths were not suitable, as they risked tool deflection with the hard wood or created an inaccurate path. MecSoft Corporation provided the solution using their VisualCAD/CAM software.

MecSoft’s solution employed an innovative use of the software’s 2½ Axis Engraving toolpath. A precise "spine curve" was created along the groove's center, which guided a flat-end mill to machine the entire 3D feature in a single, accurate pass. This technique, combined with a custom fixture method for machining both sides of the guitar, resulted in a perfectly machined, high-quality guitar body, demonstrating the powerful and cost-effective capabilities of VisualCAD/CAM for complex custom fabrication.
