Jim Thompson Marine Carpentry - Customer Case Study

Jim Thompson Marine Carpentry, a yacht restoration and refitting specialist, needed to machine a complex mounting bracket from hardened steel with a unique 5-degree ramped keyway. The challenge was to program their CNC machine for this difficult part, a task their new CNC operator, David St. Angelo, had to learn from scratch. They turned to MecSoft Corporation and its RhinoCAM CNC programming software to find a solution.

The solution from MecSoft Corporation utilized RhinoCAM to define a sequence of operations, including drilling, roughing, and finishing toolpaths. A key strategy involved using pre-defined machining regions to guide a 2½ Axis Engraving operation, which provided the precise control needed to successfully cut the challenging ramps. Despite David having no prior CAM software or CNC programming experience, he was generating successful toolpaths and completing cuts after only two weeks of training, significantly accelerating his proficiency and the shop's capabilities.
