NOPSEMA, Australia's offshore energy regulator, faced significant challenges with its fragile 10-year-old legacy regulatory management system. The monolithic application, hosted in a local data center, had a convoluted codebase and could not easily meet growing public and legislative demands for digital services. To overcome this technical debt and modernize their core system, NOPSEMA partnered with application modernization specialist Mechanical Rock.

Mechanical Rock implemented a pragmatic strategy to develop a new, decoupled investigations application using a cloud-native, event-driven architecture on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The solution featured a React front-end and serverless microservices, which integrated seamlessly with the existing system. This provided a solid modernization foundation for NOPSEMA, resulting in a significant reduction in system failure risk, improved security and scalability, and the ability to make changes without disruption. Mechanical Rock's work also enabled NOPSEMA to modernize its business processes and adopt continuous delivery practices.
