Consumers Power Inc. serves electricity to 61 counties in the southern peninsula of Michigan and needed a way to calculate online heat rate across its twelve coal-fired generating units at five power plants. Measuresoft addressed this challenge with a SCADA solution based on its ScadaPro product running on the Microsoft Windows platform.

Measuresoft installed a system to collect data from a distributed I/O network and monitor temperature, pressure, flow, plant output, and overall effectiveness in real time. Using steam tables to calculate heat rate efficiency and importing data into spreadsheets for analysis, the solution also logged information for historical review, while the Windows-based platform improved accessibility across the corporate network and reduced training costs through a familiar user interface.
